Parents of children in Lewiston-Porter school want to limit the consumption of fried and high fat foods. Superintendent R. Christopher Roser says "cost and taste are the hurdles. Healthier options can cost more and if you put sugar and salt in something, kids approve of it more. It will be a balance, but how you present healthy food can make a difference, too." Parents have their children bring lunch to school rather than spending money to buy school lunches that aren't healthy for consumption. After other complaints the district assured parents that changes would be happening at all grade levels.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that almost a third of the children in the United States are obese. In the 1960's and 1970's this number was only at five percent. Unhealthy school lunches could be a possible cause.
